Wandering

I wonder if Wanderer will try to register here. Prolly not, but I say... the first person who uses the phrase 'ad hominem' here at eMusers, should be kicked out.
Mine was a reference in quotes.... don't kick me out.

I'll show you petty.

This is a petty thread.

  • Mac keyboards are better-deisgned to resist crumbs from eating. Just an observation.
  • Being that this is such a vibrant and active community, I don't see why he wouldn't.
  • You eat crumbs from your keyboard?
  • 'ad hominem'

Does that have something to do with having gay sex with Eminem?

I don't think any one should be kicked out for that.
  • Other than it was with Eminem...
  • Why would Wanderer even want to come here?? He practically owns the eMu board now. Since eMu first announced the plan changes he seems to have developed some sort of OCD for sticking his friggin' opinions into virtually every thread. And in every thread he joins it seems that every 4th or 5th post is from him.

He's one of the big reasons I've pretty much stopped posting on eMusic. Not that I've been all that prolific myself in recent times, but when the plan changes were first posted I was simply too angry and too stunned to post anything coherent. But by the time I got over the initial shock (still angry, tho) and thought I might post an opinion or two of my own about it all I was starting to see that nearly every thread was being devolved by him into some sort of debate on "why my big brain makes me fabulously correct about everything and you are a clueless idiot". Who needs that crap?? Constantly trumping other people's opinions - right or wrong - makes for shitty conversations and a useless forum. So I'm done with posting there. I just lurk for the recommendations - and the occasional bit of jack-assery from the few old-timers who still post there.
  • I just ignore him.
  • I've been trying to ignore him, but it's not working very well. The only thing remotely even funny was the other PhDs telling him he had BBS (big brain syndrome). Thanks for the levity on crumbs and M&Ms.
Ha, I remember dameduck owning the eMu boards.
  • 1. exceedingly coincidental that he appear 2 weeks before the plan redux (claiming to be a long time member - repetitively)...an attempt at establishing an experienced/reasoned perspective.
    2. his sole point was "in the past 2 years the selection has slimmed down" - which would bleed into "we need to raise prices to keep the indies around"...somewhat of a moral high ground.
    3. he's around all the time to post and becomes the most prolific poster
    4. cathy addresses his questions above all others (ml, nereffid neglected)
    5. his response to post-initiation ratio is absurd - if he has all these ideas, why not lead? instead, he's always in the confrontation/contrarian/response role (his only start-post is the "how are you going to adapt?" post - surprised?)
    6. he was called out as a company shill 2x + over-reacted in each response immediately. further, when leafy was called out as a company plant, he (out of nowhere) over-reacted in defense - classic "...doth protest too much" case.

in short - THAT is a company plant. i hate to think that emu (as we perceive folks like yancey and even genmod) would bend to that level...given the price alteration, the wanderer campaign is unethical. katrina, your link to the emu suits and music lover's remark re: emu and the emu community are no longer associated convinces me this is the case.

  • Actually, Wanderer had been around the message boards for at least a couple of months and if it wasn't for these changes we could probably accuse him of being an iTunes shill. Just put the tin foil hats away and ignore him. Of course then again, you probably think I'm a shill. I'll let you in on a special secret: some people just happen to disagree with you.
  • My tin foil hat tells me he was a frequent poster on some political debate sites and got kicked out of his favorite site, or that site went into the web's never-never land sometime in March, and now he needs a new board to conquer.

    Still doesn't explain points 4 & 6.

Ah well, he can have it.
  • ok - i planted a smoke out the weasel test on the boards - calling out a first time poster as a plant.

    within the hour:

Are CapnMatt and I being accused? I trust your post was made with a smile and a wink.

I can tell you I was a "first time poster" because I entered the message boards trying to find out when various new releases would drop and stumbled on WWIII breaking out.

btw, apparently the Dino Jr. problems were worked out because I DL'd it today and it is about as good an album by a band with over 25 years of tread on the tires as I can remember. Wow.

i will now charge you all 25cents for predicting the future on your mild site!
  • Yeah, neither of them (Leafsfool & CapnMatt) really have downloaded much , considering how long their profiles say they've been around.
  • hmm... CapnMatt has been here since Sept 2004. Assuming he had a 90 download account. 12 * 90 * 5 = 5400. He's downloaded 203 artists which is an average of 26 songs per artist. Browsing through his downloads that looks like it. If he's like me he skips the daily download, in fact I'll bet most don't even know about the daily download. Paranoia is stupid.
  • I did look at quite a few of those artists, and it's nowhere near 26 songs per artist. Most only had one album with around 10 tracks. Right, he wasn't getting the daily downloads.

So maybe he didn't have a 90 plan. Maybe he forgot to use his allotment, most months. Maybe he put his account on hold for a while. Maybe I just picked the wrong artist to look at, and he DL'd 500 tracks from Various Artists. I'm not being paranoid, just noticing he doesn't have as many downloads as other folks that were subscribers that long.

That being said, it's no use calling someone out as a plant.
  • My pseudo-random sampling yielded quite a few artists with 50+ downloads. But, then again, I'm a fan of numbers and the surprises they yield.
  • try comparing your 0 tracks available per artist vs. his.

having gone thru re-dl of my library, my 0's amazed me - in the 40% range.

what i see is that they've absconded an abandoned account (some 0's will occur), updated it with cool/hip indie stuff and renamed the account.

i didn't necessarily call him out as a plant as he did himself. i just supplied the smoke.

and, if nothing else, the threat of being called out is real...emu will either stop it or reign it in or never do it. none of that is bad for the community.
  • Contrarian! Yes, that's my nick for him. I never noticed him until he started presenting himself as "the voice of reason" re the changes. I grew tired of him in one heck of a hurry.

I probably won't post here any more than I do at eMu, but it sure is good to see you guys! I don't consider myself part of the in crowd. I'm one of those who likes to hang around the fringes, to bask in the reflected glow of the wit and wisdom. Lots of glow here.
  • mommio - i encourage you to post...gosatango's site was infinitely better designed (v. emu boards) and yet it excelled only when the emu board was shut down. my take is the emu boards will be littered with "less glowy folks" very quickly and in large numbers - making the emu board a lowest common denominator experience.

so, this type of board will draw...but it will take a commitment of folks to make it work. having each other is not a bad thing.
  • Hi mommio, good to see you, too. I consider myself one of the gushing dorks crowd. Several old-timer posted they'd like to see me stop posting drivel, oh well.
The contrarian is off on more bitch sessions about the bitch clique today. I've been using the scroll button a lot.

That could only have been from the "get off my lawn!" brigade...

You got plenty of glow, so you go girl! Knowing how much the music moves you, feel free to post whatever it tells you to.

And same for you, mommio! Glow isn't about how MUCH you post and it don't come from wit and wisdom - if that were the case, I'd be suckin' the light out of the room every time I entered it. Glow comes from the heart and from sayin' it like you hear it. Glow is about knowing that there is no right or wrong opinion about music and that the worst thing you can say about it is to say nothing at all. Glow is nothing more than feelin' it deep inside and then passin' it along to someone - anyone - even if it's only one other person. Glow is not just the joy of discovery but the joy of sharing it as well. Glow is everything and it is nothing. It is here. It is now. IT is real.

Glow is a lot of things, but it sure as shit isn't about having a PhD and a stinging wit...

So come down from the peanut gallery - the both of you - and stand with the old-timers, where you belong.
  • Hello all!

I've been weaning myself off eMu but it's proving harder than I thought. In idle moments I browse the boards and...

    Ugh.

    From the thread http://www.emusic.com/messageboard/viewTopic.html?topicId=185730

blueskies: "I've been relatively quiet on this subject until now because I know I'll probably be attacked for one or all of the following: a) I haven't posted enough to the boards to hold an opinion b) I haven't been a member for long enough c) My musical tastes aren't broad enough to be considered part of the bitchy clique that has formed. IF YOU BELIEVE ANY OF THE ABOVE TO BE TRUE, PLEASE DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND STOP READING."

Wanderer: "The bitchy clique and the people who seemed to think board seniority was an imprimatur for the worth of an opinion appear to have been quieted. Perhaps that was an unintended, but no less worthy, outcome of the policy changes."

I need to stay away from these people.

Then I read something like this from the "Making lemonade" thread:

berger.derek: "I may even start checking out more Classical."

What?! You have to wait until Sony shows up?

I want to beat this person over the head with my BIS 35th Anniversary sampler.

    sparkle sparkle
  • Hey Nereffid (and everybody else!), I've been trying to stay away from the eMu too, but you're right, it's a hard habit to break - wonder if that old Chicago song will show up there next month?

Definitely getting easier to avoid the boards with some of the idiots coming out of the woodwork now though! Maybe some of them felt the old-timers were intimidating for some reason, can't see it myself but there's no accounting for just how weird some people can be.

My main concern (apart from wanderer etc secretly infiltrating here of course!) is how I'm going to use the site now that booster packs are prohibitively priced :-(
I think I'm going to have to wait until the end of my refresh cycle before splurging rather than blowing the lot on the first day.
I nearly weakened a couple of times this month and my SFL is back up to 500 again.
    Damn.
  • Aw madhatter, thanks. I enjoy your posts, too.

I want to beat this person over the head with my BIS 35th Anniversary sampler.
This is pretty funny. And quite apt. The image of you beating a virtual person over the head with a computer file!
  • Also, I have to keep checking the emu boards because I'm waiting for Mma's 'french' thread to drop off the first page or two.
I have this irresistible urge to bump it back up for him by posting "beump".

    :-)
  • xtrev, I didn't see your posts before I made mine. I can't not get the daily as long as I have a subscription, and it's just too easy to click on the discussions link.

heh. I'll beump Mma'a thread with some of my very poor French, too.
  • Yesterday Wanderer used the word 'imprimatur' in one of his posts. He's like The Comic Book Guy on the Simpsons.
  • lol! madhatter - wow...the flow of the glow!!! clink!

i'm sucking off the daily dl's thx to xtrev's link (never really did that b4) - i still have to complete the last U, V, W, X, Y, Z in re-dling my inventory. pifffffft.

imho, there are still two big issues that emu marketing has to be on guard against moving forward. here's one. say some mysterious grandfather posts "retention v re-subscribing" with the substance being emusic tosses out 15/25 bonus dl's for sticking around (retention)...but they will undoubtedly run a re-subscribe e-mail campaign to get those they've lost. since those folks have already turned down the 15/25 they'll have to sweeten the deal - say in the magnitude of 50. the mysterious grandfather then says "i'm probably as cheap as wanderer calls us, so i'm going to quit + hold out for the 50 - what would you do?"

t-viper, i'll let you make the prediction on how fast wanderer would be on this one + no doubt he'd push the stay button as it costs emusic far less to keep the waters calm...

by the way, if you (general, more @quacky, but he doesn't post much here) don't think i ran a campaign to dick with emu marketing/wanderer y'er flat out wet behind the ears, born last nite, eyes wide shut.

@nereffid: joey jo jo used to say "emusic: come for the music, stay for the drama..." and send me an e-mail as i have a ton of story line issues to work thru you!!!
  • I still visit the eMu boards, catching a glimpse of music recommendations here and there. Like you, Katrina, I am doing a lot of scrolling, leaving massive amounts of posts unread.

Good to see you, Nereffid -- have missed your posts at eMu.

Katrina, I would never want to see you leave. There was a bit of a Katrina dry spell a month or two ago. No one else can make the funny, biting comments quite like you. Sometimes you have me laughing out loud, completely enjoying your posts.

I do hope this forum flies. Thank you to all for your contributions.

Nerrifid - thanks for the best laugh of the day... in my book, beating someone over the head with the BIS sampler is second only to a good old-fashioned face burning. (gawd I miss DBD... some day I hope to find out what a Scotch egg tastes like)

And cbcd, thanks for helping to make my eMu forum lurking bearable again. It is now permanently etched into my mind - everytime I read a post by Wanderer I now hear the words being said by Comic Book Guy in my head - and no matter what he says it becomes insanely hilarious! It's sorta like that old speech-giver's trick about imagining your audience in their underwear, except it doesn't involve throwing-up in my mouth a little.

    sizzle sizzle pop! {smoke}
