"Does anyone know if they{Sony} allow any downloads of their stuff during the trial period?"
Apparently that would be a big fat NO as the first Troll rants have already begun to appear. Oopsie, not what they were expecting. Not really that surprising. Mother's not giving her cookies away for free now, is she?
In other words, the indies are not only getting booted off the front pages, but they're also subsidizing Sony's arrival by giving up the freebies, while Sony is not.
I was surprised that free trials won't' be able to download anything from Sony. No doubt a label demand. So much for trying to attract fans of more mainstream music.
"I was surprised that free trials won't' be able to download anything from Sony. No doubt a label demand. So much for trying to attract fans of more mainstream music.'
You see, it's a hazing ritual - if you can endure finding 50 (or whatever number) tracks of hideous useless indie noise or moldy old jazz or blues, then you can move on to the promised land of major label goodness once you have proven yourself worthy to pay for it.
I think most members came here because it was cheap and they wanted to build up their MP3 collections at a low cost. In order to do that, they had to settle for indie music. In the process, those who stayed became fans of indie music.
Wandy himself. Another thread complaining about the indies being gassed out by Sony, and Wandy said that it was based on two myths - eMusic as a top indie shop (because that wasn't the "intent" it's suddenly a myth that they've marketed themselves as such for years) and eMusic users as indie shoppers (we're all just cheapskates).
I'll just add that Rayray had it right in his response - most of the people coming to eMu came for the free trial. The few that actually stuck around most likely already had an interest in indie (or jazz or classical or world).
@craig - when you are in a thread with longer than 15 posts, simply select "newest" as your sorting criteria (then go back to "oldest" if you want to read them in chronological order. it's a board hiccup - the one that started joey jo jo's "is it really that hard" thread. all the posts will be displayed once you "toggle around".
Oh, I know. I meant I don't open them if they are longer than 15 posts because more likely than not there is a battle raging that I'm not interested in.
I'm of the opinion that a number of people on both sides of the Sony fence are taking things too seriously and need to chillax a bit. Plus, I get enough arguing and name calling when I'm actually doing work at work. I don't also want it when I'm avoiding work at work!
i'm also getting the sony-stuffing on my homepage...music lover's thread on where they land in the service landscape makes them look all the more meh. to boot, i'm not sure if i stick around for another month to grab the 15booster cookie, that i'll be on a 30 or 24 plan...from the announcement page:
"On your next account refresh Jul 24, 2009, your plan will change to the new eMusic Basic plan which gives you 30 downloads for $11.99 every 30 days"
but from my account page it notes that i'll slough off over half my (heretofore) "largesse" and slot in at the basic24
with all the confusion surrounding terms used to quantify the transfer of .mp3's - whether "downloads, credits, etc.- i propose our standards committee consider "nitpickies" to be used herein. nitpickies can be abbreviated to np's - leaving you more efficient than .mp3's and it zeroes out confusion by embracing it.
What I find laughable is that people with less education, money, experience, communication skills, and breeding than some others may think they're elite because they prefer Beirut to Widespread Panic and read Pitchfork instead of Rolling Stone.
Anyone else still think Wandy isn't a complete asstard?
@electricity - Once I read his comment, I was waiting for someone to give me a shot to jump in (I won't respond to him directly). And I think amclark2 knows well enough that all threads are open for business over there. Especially one that is so inviting for the "mainstream elite".

In all seriousness, he is actually proving himself to be far worse than I ever imagined. I can deal with someone who just tells you to go hang yourself or walk off a cliff or get cancer. Those are stupid insults thrown out because on the Internet it's hard to convey an emotion without hyperbole, and we all go overboard from time to time. But to actually sit there and calmly suggest that superiority is dictated by breeding? Why doesn't he just come out and tell people that they should only speak to him if they're rich, white guys with a doctorate?
Lord save us from PhDs - I have known many that hated one another virulently over minutiae that no one else in the universe gives a rat's ass about, and a roomful of them - it can be worse than a bag full of tomcats. My exposure to them actually changed my career direction from academics to a more hands on line of work. Talk about pinheads. My apology to any sane PhDs in the audience, I also have known very fine and nice ones. Wandy is one of the former type though. How many angels can dance on the head of a Wanderer?
W. has 4 modes. First is the reasonable fellow (underlying which is a constant need to control). Second is attack mode - at first, he used to do this out of the blue, and almost surreptitiously, but now he has got himself a sufficiency of enemies to be fully open about it. Third is the poor me mode, when he calls on the good and the true to witness his (self-inflicted) sufferings; because he arouses extreme reactions in others, there are always some who will fall for this. Fourth is the apologetic mode when he feigns to recognise his faults, and promises to do better in future.
Psychiatry has a term for this cycle. On the internet, he's a troll.
@amclark2 - you're trolling, it's that simple. The very title of your thread was an invitation to troll. I have nothing against a spot of trolling, from time to time - I can see the fun of it, when practised between consenting adults - and Lord knows both W and Ray23 have signalled their readiness for the game. But please understand that when you play the innocent intent card, you're fooling no-one. Certainly not W.
BigD-Bluez ; I suspect there is a distinction to be made between those who have PhDs and those who *are* PhDs. In the first case it's just something that happened in the life course, in the second it's one firm rock upon which to found an otherwise fragile identity. W. *is* a PhD. Unless, of course, he's not.
@Tim; actually, not. I don't want to fight with Wanderer anymore because it finally occurred to me that he will always win; he's on emusic's side and he's on the majority of the market's side.
I never had any quarrel with Raymond23 either.
I submit as my humble evidence; the resolution now in evidence on the thread, and the fact that I included DanielEsq. in my original shout out - I've never had a quarrel with DanielEsq, and don't know anyone who has.
I like to build bridges. So I threw a rope out from the "indie" side. I also like to explore music. A whole ton of stuff just dropped that I know nothing about. So I asked the people who seemed to know a lot.
It does look like trolling though. It looks like a set-up to make fun of people's music. But, believe it or not, I'm going to get some of that stuff.
And the title; it was the old bait and switch. I hoped to draw people in, thinking they'd see more blood and guts, and instead they'd find, well, Blood, Sweat and Tears.

I don't think this is so. Is there a list of recent "Reviews of the Day," or front-page features, so we can check?

At least that's what amclark2 says.
On the 'I'm done too' thread, several of us are having a fine game together with not the slightest sign of rage. Come and join in.

And it collapsed. But things will do that.
