My take today included Tago Mago by Can. "Vitamin C" is missing from Ege Bamyasi - title search did not turn up the track from the album. Haven't dug deep, but there are only 7 of 9 tracks on Grant Green's Born to Be Blue - I'll be searching for the two missing titles. Yesterday I grabbed Jimmy Smith's Groovin' at Small's Paradise.
On my to get list includes the Bonzo Dog Band - they have stuff on EMI. Dr. Feelgood's Down by the Jetty is available (the extended on with over 31 tracks), and it looks like Captain Beefheart's Ice Cream for Crow and Doc at the Radar Station are available - I have 'em and highly recommend them.
Both Avalon and Siren are missing from the site. Presumably because the first one scores high on critics list and the later has the only top 20 hit they had.
Pat Martino - Live at Yoshis - complete album, 8 tracks. Some pretty hot playing - recommended if you like Wes Montgomery or jazz Organ/guitar/drum power trios.
Both Avalon and Siren are missing from the site. Presumably because the first one scores high on critics list and the later has the only top 20 hit they had.
I'm not buying that. Country Life and For Your Pleasure make just as many critical lists (if not more) than Siren, and both are available (although FYP seems to be missing at least 1 track). And as for Avalon, "More Than This" is on the site - why keep off the rest of the album if you're going to let the big hit be free? Similarly with Pink Floyd - if they're holding back Wish You Were Here, why would The Wall and Dark Side of the Moon be up. Especially considering Dark Side is one of the all-time biggest selling albums.
It's more likely that they just can't get everything up right away and are removing albums that had problems. I always assume technical problems and incompetency before conspiracy.
Siren is about the weakest album they made until Flesh and Blood. Although it was the first Roxy record to have two singles drawn from it (Love Is the Drug and Both Ends Burning), it didn't perform in the US as well as Country Life. And I don't think I've even seen it in a list of the greatest albums of all time, which can be said for Roxy Music, For Your Pleasure, Stranded, Country Life, and Avalon. The only thing that really makes it different is that it is that has the most conventional song structures of any Roxy album. Or maybe it's the songwriting credit for Eddie Jobson.
Thought I'd write up what all I've grabbed so far this week.
Wire - Pink Flag
Hockey - Mind Chaos: Missing two tracks.
Wire - 154
Massive Attack - Collected
The Verve - Urban Hymns
Wire - Chairs Missing
Cannonball Adderley - Experience in E
Poet and the Roots - Dread Beat An' Blood
The Beta Band - The Three EPs
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver: Missing one track.
Blur - Parklife
N.W.A. - Straight Outta Compton
Radiohead - The Bends
Burning Spear Best of the Fittest
Blur - The Great Escape
Heart - "Crazy on You" single
OK, I looked it up. It seems that Siren did make the last Rolling Stone Greatest 500 list. I'm a little surprised, but I think it's interesting that the list that Rolling Stone did in the mid-1980s had three Roxy albums in the top 100. All the Roxy albums are in the 300s in 2003 list. Siren's position seems to be more indicative of the decline of Roxy's reputation rather than its particular strengths.
BigD, thanks for the Linda Ronstadt tip...I meant to ask if anyone had a good rec on the Vanguard list.
More Blue Note Biggies today...the Sidewinder, Mercy Mercy Mercy, Cool Struttin, Somethin Else, etc. All albums that I had the title track on a Blue Note comp, bought long before I ever thought I'd want the complete albums.
I'd particularly recommend Somethin Else for you jazz dabblers...great "modern jazz" session with Cannonball and Miles (and Blakey and Sam and Hank Jones). The combination of Cannonball and Miles strikes me as the ultimate in hot and cool.
OK, it's Sunday. The last day for the September promo, surely....
Thanks guys for keeping me interested in Guvera, well the 30 free credits didn't hurt either... Funny that Blue Note stuff is on there but not on some other place (just yet anyway if there is anything to the eMu board rumor mill).
Wow... I'm flabbergasted. And I hope this sort of scheme works as I got click friendly to boost their results to corporate world, and I have to say, it works for me as well. If I see a company giving me free music I love, I will move their item to first to be considered status when it's time to buy. That aside, here's my only-I-care list of the free haul in two days: Herbie Hancock Inventions and Dimensions Herbie's Maiden Voyage Ben Harper's White Lies in Dark Times Sinead O'Connor's Celtic album Joe Henderson's Page One Cecil Taylor's Unit Structures Sidewinder Donald Byrd's Cat Walk Two Freddie Hubbard (Ready for Freddie and Blue Spirits)
I'll bet we get one more day out of this--someone will come it tomorrow to fix the glitch. In truth, I doubt that anyone either at Guvera or EMI would care if a few people go crazy on their Jazz back catalogs.
Today:
Little Axe: Champagne and Grits (blues-dub)
Thad Jones: Consummation (thanks to someone upthread)
Turtledukhs: True Lover (backporch bluegrass)
@ Doofy: The Vanguard catalog can be scatterd--a lot of great albums from the 60s are still out of print. It also seems that a number of recent crossover albums aren't available on Guvera (no Blue Giant, eg). There is Mindy Smith and John Hurt. Sugar Hill is much stronger for progressive acoustic and alternative country.
I don't think it's a glitch - they stated that they wanted to let people download as much as the want with this promo. I'm guessing the cap every 24 hrs is to prevent someone from setting up a bot and download thousands of tracks.
Here's a buy - Mingus in Wonderland - full album, only 4 tracks! It's smokin' too!
Maybe I'm missing something, but I started with 31 extra downloads and I don't think it's gone back up since I've been downloading stuff in the last few days.
@# choiceweb0pen0 - every night, about midnight, the Guvera fairies replenish my downloads. 31 per day, and I think them kindly. Use them all up, and tomorrow yo have 31 more.
I am amazed at how productive Lee Morgan was in the 60's. 25+ albums from 1958 through 1968, with two live albums in the early 70's, not to mention dozens of albums as a sideman. According to Wikipedia, he died young: "Following an altercation between sets, Morgan's common-law wife shot him in the chest, killing him within moments. He was 33 years old"
I'm perplexed by the number of artists that show up negative if you put them in the Search box but if you do the more laborious browse search you will find, David Bowie for one. Just in case anyone has been discouraged by that feature.
From left field this: https://www.guvera.com/search?q=album_id:+"094633809451" The Very Best of Chris Spedding - would especially rec the tracks Hurt By Love and Silver Bullet. Spedding's page also led me to Billy Idol's Rebel Yell, which I was not aware was one of his myriad sideman appearances, with some sort of bonus cuts.
I didn't have a problem finding David Bowie doing an artist search yesterday, but I have noticed that I occasionally forget to change the search box to search by artist. Could that have been the issue for you on Bowie?
Jackie McLean's Old and New Gospel w/Ornette Coleman (just 3 tracks)
Jackie McLean's Destination Out w/Bobby Hutcherson (just 4 tracks)
Estrella Morente's My Songs and a Poem (listed as Mi Cante y un poema) --awesome traditional Flamenco
Karen Ann's s/t
Simple Minds' Once Upon a Time (first four tracks)--I'll own up to Sparkle in the Rain, but dl this one is a marital duty.
Here's one that everyone needs in their collection The Dukes of the Stratosphear - Chips from a Chocolate Fireball (XTC incognito). Mole from the Ministry is the best rip on Am the Walrus, and Shiny Cage has one of the coolest basslines ever - taken directly out of the Pepper era McCartney playbook and then turned on its head. Lots of catchy stuff - 16 tracks which combines an album and an ep which were released in the late 80s.
@Plong 42: have you checked out Andrew Hill's Grass Roots with Lee Morgan? It's an interesting mesh of Hill's style in an attempt to produce a Sidewinder-type hit. The RVG edition is 10 tracks, including the first take on the entire album that Blue Note rejected.
@Doofy: Thanks for checking. I would have loved that set.
I'll bet we get one more day out of this--someone will come it tomorrow to fix the glitch.
Sept promo seems to have just ended abruptly...!
I wish I hadn't, but it was a whole lotta fun. Next I'll make a list of Universal boxes that will likely be mispriced when that conglomerate comes to eMu.
ETA: I don't know if there was any intention to the daily refreshes, but I now have a deep understanding of what's on Capital/EMI and a few things I would seek out (particularly Charles Musselwhite on Real World). It was a great way to spread familiarity with the product.

Craziness...tracks drawn from 4 different albums. And then there's a 12th track that's hiding out here: https://www.guvera.com/search?q=title:+%22one+man's+dream%22. It would be impossible to find this stuff w/o referring to Amazon.

BTW, can anyone find Mingus' Cornell concert?
BT, "Cornell 1964" does not seem to be there. I even searched on "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" to double-check!
@Doofy: Thanks for checking. I would have loved that set.
Doh! Thank you Craig. That would explain why the second artist I look for usually comes up.
Got Electric Dirt by Levon Helm over the weekend.
I'll bet we get one more day out of this--someone will come it tomorrow to fix the glitch.

Oh well, no regrets here, and it certainly was fun while it lasted.
