  • Great, Don Cherry will be one of their most DL'd artists of the month...that'll give them something to wonder about!

I haven't had any problems with stalled DLs. The one track at a time thing "is what it is," that's how they make their money (if any). The tags are messed up.

Frog, I started with one batch of 15 credits...used those, then another set 10 or 12 appeared over the last week or so. Some of the original "channels" on which I had credits are gone, so it may be use 'em or lose 'em. On at least one channel (Geico), I burned a credit and another one appeared immediately.
  • Hmm, Brian Eno you say? Been trying to figure out what to blow my... er... credits on over there.
  • >another set 10 or 12 appeared over the last week or so.

I noticed that Geico and one other gave me another credit after I blew through the original 12. Occasionally I swear I was not charged a credit, or they replenished it right away. I thought it was a bug.

I also went back to my profile and changed a few things, thinking that the chances of advertisers seeking my real interests were slim. For example, I changed film preference from documentary to drama and comedy, thinking that HBO is more likely to advertise crappy dramas. I don't know if this will result in more (or new) credits, but it was worth a shot.
  • I noticed that I got some new credits - including 1.95 from Geico. If they don't add more credits to exiting channels. those partial credits are worthless.

Burning Spear is worth getting if you don't have it.

One annoying thing I've noticed is that if several albums containing the same track are on the site, only one of them will have the track listed and the rest with not. That is to say that you may have to do a track search to find missing tracks if you are trying to get the whole album. The thing to do it to look up the album in Allmusic and do a side by side comparison.

    Cecil Taylor's Conquistador - only 3 tracks.

Anyone else have problems with their playlists stalling out after playing 3-4 tricks.?
  • Inspired by frog's Cecil Taylor find: Rudy Van Gelder editions on Guvera.

    Haven't tried the streaming feature.
  • I think I broke their site. :(
  • Doofy thanks for the list. I noticed that they threw a few more credits into my account, hopefully enough to get an album.

Another thing I noticed - they have quite a few of the Beatle's solo albums, in fact the majority up through the mid 80s. Definitely Pick up Lennon's Plastic Ono Band (one of my top 5 albums of all time) & Imagine, as well as McCartney's Ram, the non-Jam Tracks from Harrison's all things must pass, as well as assorted tracks from all 4 of the members.

The Guvera generated playlists seem to be problematic, but the user created ones are great - I made a aprox 50 track playlist of assorted solo Beatle solo hits and it works just fine. Plus they save your playlists for you.
  • Also, since they have EMI on board, there is a treasure trove 60s british music available, including most of the Stone's albums
  • Calgone (and others) just took me away to Roxy Music - Roxy Music.

    Sweet.

  • I noticed that they have most of the classic Can albums:Monster Movie, Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi & Future Days, etc. - these are a good value, since most are 4-7 tracks
  • There is a new "demo channel" with videos that 'splain several aspects of the site. They are certainly positioning themselves as an alternative to P2P. "Can I DL as much as I want?" The answer is no, but the idea is that will change as the site grows.

There are a few new channels, and the useless "decimal" credits are gone.
  • Some good updates. They also added download buttons to the main search page.

    Craig
  • Yeah, it was somewhat irritating to have a bunch of .95 and .64 credits staring you in the face and knowing that they weren't good for anything.

I'm a little surprised about the download button, since it wouldn't require you to view a advertiser's page to download a song. How does that work? Can you only use for songs you are paying for with real money?
  • I am not sure if my tweaking my preferences helped, but I had a couple of credits from Microsoft and some dumb movie advert after I shifted from documentaries to comedies. I really don't like most Hollywood comedies, but for a free Cecil Taylor track, they can think I like that crap.
  • I had the Microsoft credits show up on Thursday without making any changes, so I don't think changing your profile did anything. That said, they may try targeting the credits/ads more in the future.

My girlfriend and I have very different preferences for our profiles, but so far we've received the exact same amount of credits from the exact same sponsors.
  • Interesting interview from Claes Loberg, CEO of Guvera.

Is it just me, or does he look like one of those Scandinavian Metal dudes? (Or half the metalheads in Minnesota, which is sort of the same thing)

  • Same interview as I posted on April 7. ;-P

I got a couple of Shelby Lynne records the other day which is cool although its still comparatively a lot of work and now I'm out of credits with no way of know if I'll get any more.
  • It is a PITA to get a whole album, but Guvera probably isn't for us. I'm imagining it's really aimed at people who are interested in chart tunes and who would either buy a track or two from iTunes or Amazon or would just Google for a free download. Granted, one can get whole albums, but it isn't easy, as many have noted.
  • I have to agree with Captain Wrong, the payoff for the amount of effort is minimal. I love free music, but not when it takes too much work for it.

Here's a must have to get if you don't have it = Original Soundtrack From the Film Rockers.

I would rank it as one of the 20 or so most essential Reggae Albums of all time.

Reggae Fans Take Note: Most of the Virgin Frontline albums of the late 70s early 80s are on Guvera, as are a big helping of Trojans album. However, it looks like the various Trojan boxes have the first disc for some reason. The comps by individual artists look to be more or less complete.
  • I checked my Guvera account, and it looks like they added about 1/2 dozen new credits.

Another thing I've noticed is that Tangerine Dream has a buttload of album for 2-4 tracks. They are one of those groups I haven't paid much attention to, but the little I've listened to is decent enough, and I know they are highly regarded by Krautrock aficionados. Anyone have must haves by that band?
  • >I checked my Guvera account, and it looks
    > like they added about 1/2 dozen new credits.

Mine had exactly one new credit this morning, so I finished off a Cecil Taylor album. You must be more popular than me.

You guys are both cooler than me. I don't have any new ones. Does the fact that I have had 4 sitting my account matter?

    Craig
  • I hadn't checked for about 10 days, and I've also been streaming a lot of songs.

Is it true that if you don't use it you lose it?

    I better d/l something...
  • >I've also been streaming a lot of songs.

I have yet to stream, but I rarely stream any site. Maybe I'll stream a bit today and see if I get a bonanza.

It works best if you make your own playlists....
  • I helped a couple of people (one male, one female) sign up to Guvera at work this week, and noticed that women were started out with about 8 credits more due to sponsors now targeting their products more carefully. The Calgon and Victoria Secrets' credits that I got when I joined earlier are now only being doled out to women. It makes sense, since highly specified targeting of advertising is Guvera's main selling point.

It looks like if you want to get more credits or a regular basis, get you wives to join......
  • I would hope that if my wife is getting lots of ads for Victoria's Secret I'm getting more than just music... if you know what I mean... and I think you do.
