  • Thanks Muggsy. That's the way I was leaning anyway.

thom - Not too concerned about the time/length of songs. eMu doesn't have it, so I have to get it elsewhere regardless, and free is good!

Pink Flag is surprisingly expensive at 7dig and Amazon, so getting it for free at Guvera makes sense (if you are committed to a digital copy). Normally, I keep to albums I can dl in seven days (that is, seven tracks or less. Correspondingly I expect to get at least four albums out of Guvera.
  • I'm certainly not committed to digital, but I am committed to free at the moment, so....

Having a kid really lessens the amount of money you can spend on music and other frivolous crap. It's been months since I saw live music. The kid better be worth it!

I don't worry about the length of albums I'm getting on Guvera, but try and not get stuff that I can get on eMu. I messed up on PiL's Second Edition, but otherwise I've succeeded.

  • Craig, this child isn't even born yet, right? Get out there now, is my advice! After kid is born, your next live show is likely to be "Sesame Street On Ice."
  • Gotta agree with Doofy: get it out of your system now if you need to! There's some cool kid's/family music now, but They Might be Giants on Saturday morning just isn't the same as They Might Be Giants on Saturday night.
  • Oh, I know. Just got to afford things like cribs and strollers!

    Craig
  • I still kick myself for not grabbing Pink Flag when it was 5 bucks on Amazon - that was like 3 years ago!

And not to depress you Craig, but I haven't seen a live concert in over 2 years now. Was going to try to see Lyle Lovett this past Sunday, but was too tired after yard work (in the rain).
  • Man, first Computer World disappeared when I was halfway through, and now the last track for Lexicon of Love didn't d/l. Nothing happened when I clicked on the link. I did notice that it wouldn't stream either - might be a good idea to try that in the future before wasting a credit.
  • Did they stop giving out a demo credit each day?
  • None this morning for first time in some weeks.
  • Well that blows. I was one track from finishing the new M.I.A.

I had a feeling that would happen eventually, though.

    Craig
  • Yeah, you knew it wasn't going to last forever. I was lucky, just yesterday finished "Money Jungle," minus the alt takes. Perhaps something new will happen after Sept 1.
  • Well, I would have preferred that the credits came with sponsorship, even if they did not come on a daily basis. On the other hand, we've already seem Guvera "correct" problems that appeared earlier--ECM did disappear for a day.
  • Apparently the entire site is just for me. I logged in and found TWO demo credits. Sorry guys, all your credits r belong to me!
  • Why do I has a sudden craving for a cheezburger?

Silly Doofy, you're confusing your internet memes again.

  • I knew there were some cats in there someplace.
  • Those two demo credits were added yesterday. I received my daily one yesterday morning and those extra credits came later the same day. This morning? Nothing. Hopefully it starts up again. Or, even better, sponsored credits will start flowing. Only received one or two the last month.
  • I'm beginning to think Guvera is going to be a dead-end now. I hate to jump to conclusions, but outside of the initial credits for signing up I've only received a handful that weren't demo credits. Without the demo credits, there's no reason to check on a regular basis to see if anything else is coming in - especially since there's no easy way to check.

It was a nice idea, but unless there's a reasonable expectation of regular credit drops from advertisers, what's the point?
  • Thom's post made me wonder if I could find any recent Guvera news. And I did, of the press release variety: http://musicindustryreport.org/?p=24798

    Notably:
Last week Guvera inked a deal with a New York based investment bank to raise a further US$50m. This backing will expand Guvera’s global presence, add to Guvera’s platform offering and move the company towards additional content including music video, film and TV.

Those do not sound like small plans. I suspect their true ambitions are in the streaming playlists/video, and then of course there is the "cloud," which is just going to be the most stupendous thing ever. And, in conclusion:
Join the Guvera revolution, the true alternative to pirate music sites.

How's that for defining yourself by the competition?
  • I myself wonder how long Amie street will be around. Judging from the how quickly pricing of their top 25 changes (or rather how quickly it's not changing), they can't be grossing more than the very low 5 figures a week - and that has to pay overhead and any payouts to the artists. Also, it doesn't seem like more than a few artists per week move enough units to where they are even getting a payout at all.
  • > Also, it doesn't seem like more than a few artists per week move
    > enough units to where they are even getting a payout at all.

This is probably the key. I am willing to drop 75 cents on something that as 9 or 13 cents a track, even if I only listen to it once because it is DIY. Those bands will never ever see a dime from Amie, so that is all profit for AmieStreet. OTOH, my 13 cent track only generates 6 and a half cents since I have been buying credit from the 50% sale, or less because the money came from cashed recs. Still sell enough DIY artsit tracks and there is some cash flow.
  • I've noticed that the amount of new material added to Amie each week has really dropped off. There has been only one major label add in the last year--Metropolis--and I think a few have split, Shelflife and Shanachie/Yazoo among others. It seems that the substantial new material is easily exhausted in a few hours on Tuesday.
  • Just went to Guvera to see if I had any new credits. I don't, but I did notice that the "Don't have new credits?" price has changed from $1.29 to $1.59. Yet another terrible sign.

    Craig
  • Three credits from Geico, Mastercard and Sprint today....nearly finished with Blue Spirits from Freddie Hubbard.

I clicked on the links for these companies think they are getting something for their money. MC were all dead links, not good for Guvera's business model.
  • Thanks for the heads-up, I got 2 from Geico, plus MC and Sprint. Enough to get the "Money Jungle" alt takes...
  • Woohoo! Three new ones for me too. I can finally finish the new M.I.A. and start on something else. Was going to do Wire, but may need to find an album with fewer tracks so it doesn't take a year and a half to finish.

    Craig
  • Yipee! Going for Jackie McLean's 4, 5, and 6 ... gotta restart my Mal Waldron obsession.
  • BT, funny you should mention this, as I was just looking up some info on Mal recordings last night, and came across this: http://www.plosin.com/milesAhead/waldron.html

How's that for a discography? 200+ recordings, 50 years, 3 continents (at least), and God knows how many labels. A Mal completist would have to be an obsessive collector indeed!
  • Doofy, thanks. That's the most complete discography of Mal's works I've seen, and makes my task seem daunting. A good number of those are comps or are albums that aren't in print (whatever that means in the digital world). There are also a few albums whereon Mal only appeared on a few tracks (albums that brought together different sessions, especially during his Prestige years).
