In case anyone else like me is going completist on Eberhard Weber at Guvera, note that the album "Chorus" is filed there under Ralf R. Hübner.
Vibes fans (Doofy!), note that two Gary Burton albums, "Passengers" and "Ring", are filed under Eberhard Weber.
For those interested in ECM, I recommend browsing through this excellent ECM discography. Guvera is legitimately a goldmine regarding ECM - I'm really shocked it's available there, to be honest.
Thanks, kargatron. I've grabed a lot of ECM - whole new field for me to explore. Have a lot of Garbarek; all the Surman, Weber, Abercrombie, Stanko, (P
Ah, I think Marc Johnson might be the answer.
Yes, I have gateway. I got several Tibbetts albums too. And some Bjornstad.
Only thing I haven't really connected with at all so far is the Metheny.
Re Gateway, I had "Gateway", now downloading "Homecoming" - thanks!
BTW, wasn't ignoring conference of the birds, it was already on my list of things to check.
@BT - Thank you so much for mentioning the "piggybacking" technique. Tried it last night and was able to get an ECM record (karg's recommendation of Bass Desires) that I wasn't able to 10 minutes earlier. Sweet!
@karg - So I snagged Bass Desires, do you also recommend the group Marc Johnson's Bass Desires?
Thom, the group Bass Desires had two albums, that first eponymous one under Johnson's moniker, and Second Sight, which is pretty good (worth getting), though didn't come close to approaching my love of the first. YMMV, of course!
A great series of modern jazz quintet albums on ECM is the Dave Holland Quintet in the 80s, with the albums Jumpin' In, Seeds of Time, and The Razor's Edge. That was a fantastic group with Steve Coleman, Kenny Wheeler, Julian Priester, and Marvin "Smitty" Smith. Highly recommended.
A few times I've been able to unstick a download that was threatening to time out. However, there was one time--just one time--that a download stopped when I started a new one. I wish I knew why there are these inconsistent DL times, some second, some tens of minutes.
I should have noticed this previously, but I'm dim! In case anyone is interested in early Ultravox, I just found their first three albums, but you have to search "Ultravox!" (with the exclamation point!). Got it?! Good! The first two are not your father's new romantic synth pop...but they are excellent! So I exclaim!
With your searches, Gp, I bet straight discographical album lookups are the way to go for Guvera. You mentioned you liked Surman a lot, don't forget all the sideman appearances (which goes for many ECM stalwarts, of course).
I'm having to download ECM in waves. I love ECM's stuff, but how many ECM albums can I listen to in a row? My current strategy is to find smaller labels and go through their catalogs. Just went through Astralweeks (Kings of Convenience, Beth Orton, Brian Eno...).
Yes, in the end you have to search by album title and check the discographies. Sometimes I can muster the energy for that, sometimes something else catches my interest before I get the time to be so systematic :-).
And "Class Trip" by John Abercrombie is filed under Joey Baron. I actually kind of like this process - makes it more like an easter egg hunt than a department store.
ETA, and "Current Events" is under Peter Erskine.
ETA: And "Animato" is under Jon Christenson.
ETA: and "While We're Young" is under Adam Nussbaum.
ETA: and "Tactics" is under Adam Nussbaum.

Must be like being the zillionth customer on that cashier line or something.
@amclark2 - saw your Number Of The Beast post in the Listening thread - is Maiden is new to G? I'm pretty sure I've looked before and not found anything. Can fill in some holes in the catalog it seems. Did notice there's no Rime of the Ancient Mariner for the Powerslave album (only like 13 minutes - what Album Only?) which is too bad - that album's one of the first I'd rec.

One random essential early ECM release: Jan Garbarek - Afric Pepperbird
Just so you know, the absolute, #1 essential ECM album of all time is Dave Holland - Conference of the Birds.
My favorite ECM of all time is Marc Johnson - Bass Desires, the beginning of my love affair with Bill Frisell.

ETA: there is Towner's Oregon, a fusion of Jazz, Classical and Asian music.

Yet another great ECM mini-box set/retrospective.

Just discovered Amazon has an ECM best selling list.
