  • The Trane 40 track comp is $4.99 at 7digital.
  • @BadT... thanks! what a difference a dollar makes... was kinda on the fence but seriously leaning towards picking it up at Amazon... became a no-brainer for me at the slightly improved price point at 7dig.
  • Blue Train Records also has a 70 track Chet Baker Moon Love. I'm not that up on Baker's discography so it's a mystery to me.

Too lazy to see if this has come up before, but someone on the eMu boards pointed out this 4-disc latin funk comp from Fania called El Barrio. Just downloaded it todayt and it's REALLY good. And did I mention it's only $4.40 for 63 songs?
  • edited March 2012
There are several 2-disc other Fania compilations at that same price, eg, this one

I got an e-mail from a Latin music site (descarga.com) last week, which suggested than Fania may be changing distributors soon. They were talking about (and obviously trying to sell) CDs, but if you have been wanting some Fania on eMu, this might be the time to git it!
  • I would add get that 4 disc El Barrio before someone over there figures out they are selling a Best Of from that set for more than the box. There are some good deals on that label for $4.40 mixed in with the rest.
  • Just took a chance on this 4 disc Ellington set from another of those shady Eurotrash(just guessing there) labels for $5.84 - 1941-1945 - better bitrates than most such releases I'm glad to say, sounds OK so far. That label - Discos Cada/The Orchard - I'm taking a look at, a lot of repackaged US music - there's a 51 song Howling Wolf comp there that is not a bad selection and the samples sound righteous that I listened to if anyone needs.
  • So Fania just showed up on mTraks + I heard that they were changing distributors = if you were thinking of any of the Fania box sets on eMu, now might be a good time to get them.

Oops, looks like the eMu geniuses have added the Legacy 2 disc set of Diary Of A Madman by Ozzy at $5.99 instead of the single disc set. I think they make a mistake. Worthwhile stuff if you're a bathead fan.
Edit - Shucks, it looks like this has been released at Amazon too - $7.99 there - maybe the Legacy set wasn't selling too hot.

What? Bear Family? 96 tracks for $7.50? That can't be right?
Surprise to see Bear Family MP3s first off, but very pleasant surprise to get The Sun Singles Volume 6, a 4 disc set for $7.50. This is pretty hardcore obscure Sun stuff but a great find if you like the genre. Oddly it is available at Amazon for $17.99, whereas the CD version is $132 - whoah. Volumes 1-5 are not available either place as MP3s, I already checked. This is a development that bears (har-har) watching for future dividends.

Here's some text lifted from the Volume 1 description of what this series represents -
(4-CD LP-sized box with 72-page book, 114 tracks) Sun was the ultimate singles label. The original album catalogue was small, and mostly given over to Johnny Cash. Now here is the way Sun should have been reissued all along. All the original singles are presented ('A' and 'B' sides) in numerical order. Incredible care has been taken to locate the original masters or rare 78s to dub from (some of which - incredibly - have never been reissued), and we've also been successful in licensing Elvis Presley's Sun singles, so now you can hear the King of Rock And Roll in the context in which he was first heard. This - the ultimate Sun reissue series on a total of six CD boxed sets - is long overdue, but it has been worth the wait, because it has been done right.

This volume contains all the Flip Records, plus Sun 175 to 228. Here are the first 52 singles on Sun ('A' and 'B' sides), issued between 1952 and 1955, as well as the four Flip singles. All of Elvis's singles are here, as well as the first singles by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and many other legendary Sun artists. This is music history as it actually unfolded week-by-week.

    Here's the Volume 6 description -
(4-CD LP-sized box with 80-page book, 96 tracks) The sixth and final volume of The Complete Sun Singles chronicles Phillips International Records from 1959 to 1963, including all singles released from numbers 3539 to 3586. The many highlights include all of Charlie Rich's greatest hits (Lonely Weekends, Gonna Be Waiting, Who Will The Next Fool Be, etc.), Carl Mann's greatest hits (Mona Lisa, Rockin' Love, Pretend, I'm Coming Home, etc.), Sonny Burgess' return to Sun, Jerry Lee Lewis's pseudonymous single as The Hawk, bluesman Frank Frost's Jelly Roll King, classic instrumentals from Brad Suggs and Bill Justis, and Southern R&B from Jeb Stuart and Freddie North. Hank Davis provides in-depth song-by-song notes, and there are bonus interview features with forgotten Sun stars....plus Sun sax man Martin Willis' photo album!
  • 3 disc, 78 track comp on Ace Records - The Music City Story. Not going to be able to check this out until tomorrow probably, but $9.99 there at 7dig, $19.60 at eMu, $25 something at Amazon. Looking at some titles on Ace over at eMu, some of which I am sure they are re-adding with a price bump. Anything interesting I'll post later, but this is the only box set I've found.
  • @BigD - Bear Family The Sun Singles Volume 6. Did you get this? I downloaded it, but it looks to me like the tags are all on the wrong songs. I thought I would ask if anyone else found this problem before contacting CS and crying Swindleeeee.
  • edited May 2012
Plong, yes indeed, something's wrong but I think it's the Bear Family because the samples on Amazon are screwed up as well. Cry away - they might comp you on the whole thing. Tough for me to do much research on this because I'm having some modem issues currently.
Edit - Dropped them a note earlier about this - I don't know if all the listings are wrong, and if so if there's a regularity to it that would enable easier fixing, and this is not helped by the high obscurity factor - I know some of the artists but not most of the songs. Track 1 sounds like it's Track 10 - To Tell The Truth. What a Bear trap.
  • I just exchanged a series of twitter direct messages with eMusic helps, they have confirmed the problem and "We have also added $7.50 to your account balance." Whole thing took a couple of hours from my first message to the credit message. Once again, I have nothing to but good experiences with eMu customer service.
  • I've also found them very friendly with refund-type things, but at times unable to transcend the script if you have a technical issue. Though to be fair they are these days fairly quickly willing to escalate it to a live session to resolve the issue.
  • Another Louis Armstrong/Storyville album showed up: The Complete Louis Armstrong and the Dukes of Dixieland. 2 1/3 hours for $5.84.
  • Listening to that Louis set now - sweet. Another Armstrong thank you very much, BT.

A Box Of Peggs, an 81 track, 5+ hour Dave Pegg box set (most famously of Fairport Convention) - $6.49 at eMu. Precious little information even at Amazon where it is a less than pricey $17.98, but there is a user review with a lot of info in it. The 4 CD box is $77. I'm betting this is worth looking at, and I'll see if there's any info elsewhere when I can.
wikipedia Dave Pegg page - the proverbial scorecard for a long career.
Beesweb page on the box. No detailed track info yet.
Ah, here is a fairly detailed review of the box.
  • Now, if we had US pricing I'd be downloading that set, BDB! (It is £34 here!)

Jimmy Smith, The Complete Sermon Sessions, $5.84, 2 1/2 hours.
Clifford Brown and the First ladies of Jazz, $5.84, 2 hrs 40 min
    Billie Holliday, Webster/Edison Sessions, $5.84, 2 hrs 40 min
Thelonious Monk and Johnny Griffin, Live at the Five Spot, 2 1/2 hours

I think that this is that Coltrane box that disappeared from Amazon and 7dig.

Booker Ervin, The Complete Songbook Sessions, $5.84 (I have a few of the albums--they are awesome--highly recommended)
    Rollins-Cherry , The Complete 1963 Copenhagen Concert
    Art Farmer, Complete Quartet Recordings
  • @greg - A Box of Peggs over on UK 7digital, £7.99

The Coltrane box is still on UK 7digital, £4.99
  • edited May 2012
Thanks Paul - I've got most of the Coltrane already, but it looks a good bargain for someone who does not have them
  • edited May 2012
Dupe Alert - FWIW the above mentioned Jimmy Smith The Complete Sermon Sessions appears to be the same songs in different order (same # tracks, running time) as Jimmy Smith The Organ Genius - Jazz Sessions NYC '57-'58, slightly cheaper at $4.40. Had that deja vu thing going when I was looking at it. And, yes. it's good stuff.
  • Good catch, BigD

As for Clifford Brown and the First Ladies of Jazz that would be a no-brainer but I've got the component Dinah Jams album on the Eight Classic Albums CD box I picked up at Amazon, around $15 (there are some serious bargains in that series, no complaints yet, I've gotten a few), so I'm considering the bonus track version of the component Sarah Vaughan album eMu has for $5.84 instead - want to research the Cannonball Adderly bonus tracks first - looks like they are included in the Complete Sarah Vaughan on Mercury, Vol.1, Disc 5, on which the Clifford Brown material appears on Disc 3.

My eyes are glazing but I found this comp at 7digital but it's only $6.99 at Amazon - Sarah Vaughan Fifty Favorites from Roslin Records - didn't find it at eMu. I got their Little Richard comp at eMu, no complaints, but decision deferred for now.
