I have been at eMu since December 2001. I would look at the boards once in a blue moon, but I became a regular when we had a download manager fiasco -- maybe October 2006? I read far more than I post.
I just did two searches with generic words -- based on my memory of a couple of topics. Try these on for size as example of how the message board looked. This is just one wee drop of what was there.
It takes a while to build (or rebuild) a community. There's probably only a dozen active users over here so far. And yet there's still a number of music-based threads that have 30+ responses. Not bad for a board that was almost forgotten about until 2 months ago.
Sure, the biggest thread is this silly thing, but that's to be expected for now. But almost all of last week it had dropped off and threads about music were all the rage. And it will drop off again as people start making selections this month and move onto other things. My point is that ol' what's his name has really only "dominated" this board on the occasion that his asshatry has risen to a boiling point. In the meantime, a number of good discussion of the point at hand have already led me to d/l 4 or 5 recs over yonder.
I would suggest that if anybody knows anyone looking to discuss music, point them over in this direction. I hope that this board can thrive over time, but it's definitely going to take time...
@thirstyear, too bad you just found the eMusic message board. There used to be a lot of good jazz discussion over there.
EDIT: if I cared to post over there anymore, I'd probably have said exactly what you said at the end of your first post in the Truce thread, perhaps not as calmly. Like I said earlier, if R23 and Wandy think they own that board, they're welcome to it, as far as I'm concerned.
EDIT 2: I was thinking about your comment as well about much being lost. The more I think about it, I really think it's gone and ain't coming back. So much of the board before the changes was centered around a mutual goodwill towards eMusic. There was an extreme loyalty to the company that lasted through numerous kerfuffles but the way this whole deal was handled was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. That's the whole thing for me. That positive feeling I had towards eMusic is gone and I don't feel like contributing to that place any further because of that.
I'm glad my pissing all over the board had the desired effect.
Let me explain - Last evening , I logged into eMu in under my name (huggable rhino). The posts were filled with such stuff of eMu needing an enema to purge the old members, speculations about what personality disorder Katrina has, cut and pastes of the DSM IV. etc.
These clowns had been running the boards for weeks, spewing out the most ridiculous BS, and then playing the victim when anyone called them on it. I felt yesterday enough was enough, and needed to be dealt with. Past pleading on the part of some of our members did nothing - in fact it probably emboldened them. I decided to start carpet bombing with over-the-top offensive replies to give them a taste of their own medicine. Knowing how thin skinned they were, I knew that if I kept it up long enough, they would either mend their ways or leave. I may seem quite drastic to you, but it worked. The fact that they went back and deleted (edited) their more offensive comments, shows they knew what they were doing all along.
One of us admins (me, eythian, Mutantis, Dr. Mutex, Katrina, NankerP) can change it for you if you want*, otherwise it's a site feature that applies to everyone, which could get messy :-)
*although I can't find the setting for it at the moment!
MrCloud sez: "After exhibiting on August 1st the most spiteful, rude and childish behaviour (now deleted) I've ever witnessed on a forum (including gamer forums where nerdrage rules supreme) you have the arrogance lay down rules of conduct you expect us to follow. You even ask people to police the board and link to your shining example whenever they see wrong doing. Does your offensiveness have no limits?
You really want this forum to stay venom free? Fine, here's what I think should happen. You should hang your head in shame, apologise and then stop posting. Just seeing your name reminds me of it."
Nail. Head. Hit.
Arrogance is the only way I can describe it. Instead of saying "I've been behaving badly, I'm sorry, I'll change and hope you will too" we get "For the good of the board, here's the way I think things should run." They just don't get it.
I agree, but having said that, it would be nice if everyone could at least just ignore them for a while, even if there's no actual kissing and making up going on :-)
There must be far more entertaining things to talk about surely?
Keerist, now it's an 'unfair myth' and 'dedicated group of badgerers'. Still playing the victim card. Uh, no, it was slowly enough drivel to get people who don't post much to finally reply. I will NOT post in that stupid thread.
Hey I just an el-cheapo Sponge Bob MP3 player 75% off at Target. So now, I can play some Overdrive WMA=protected books from my library on the go.
Yeah, the "Truce" is all about them. My take on what Ray23 posted is that they want amnesty for all the crap they've posted in the past, but make no claims about not doing it again in the future--specifically, Wandy's pathological trait of posting in an omniscient voice and then taking anyone to task who dares disagree with him. I really want to give RayRay the benefit of the doubt, but I can't see that happening with the way that thread is playing out since it appears he's trying to set the tone for the boards when he has shown little regard for nettiquette in the past.
And of course, we're all bad people for "talking about them behind their backs" over here.
K--how much storage does that SpongeBob MP3 player have? Sounds like the kind of tchochkie I need to have hanging around.
Oh wow, I hadn't bothered to really read 1-8 on that list; just scanned it. After all, eMu already has Discussions Board Guidelines in place. How pompous & rich to write new rules for a completely different website, even. So I've broken the truce, hmmm.
Are those the ones that look like Sponge Bob's eyeballs?
I'm hitting a super target today, I'll have to see if they still have them. My sweetie loves Sponge Bob - did the whole bathroom in a Sponge Bob motif.
It's always amazing when someone comes across as arrogant and controlling even when they're apologizing of sorts. People to steer clear of.
Having had time to review some of the Treaty of Versailles, I mean, the Truce thread I find the level of self-aggrandizing pomposity just incredible. Most of these ideas have been put forth repeatedly in the previous weeks but no one had the absolute gall to lay them out as some kind of New World Order, and it is especially nervy for these two pudknockers to try to broker peace when it is their intolerable omnipresence on those boards and their insufferable behavior which fueled the situation in the first place. For my part they can take their document and put it where the sun don't shine. I will not, however, waste a word on them. I reserve my opinion for people I respect, and thus having shared it here, I will have nothing to do with "those people". I remain confident that being as they are they will be ranting from the rooftops again soon, and then, the game will be afoot.

froggy, my local Target had a few left - they were in the 75% off toy section - don't look in electronics.
I linked to the one I got, except it comes in a big plastic toy package.

Too bad he doesn't have enough common sense to understand the peanut gallery element, of which I am a key member. My major contribution to those eMu boards was replying when no one else would, to get discussion flowing.
OK, now I am really done with all of this. I've participated in enough dying online communities to recognize the signs at eMu. I wish I was enough of an admin to whisper this to only emusers, but I'm not. I do hope I can lock down this thread so no on else can post, and I can have the Last.Damn. Word.

My two cents.

Come on Katrina, you just wanted a special place to keep all your Sony downloads, tell the truth.
iPods won't play WMA-protected audiobooks from the library. I have trouble sitting in front of the PC listening to an audiobook.
Good news though, Overdrive (the library software) has come out with a Mac version. Slowly, titles are being made available for play on iPods.
This is weird and different. Old hobbits die hard, ya know.
