  • Very reasoned comments there Germanprof.

For my part I'm unlikely to stream via the app & have everything backed-up three or four-fold so am unlikely to need to re-download and yet the absence of content from My Music still rankles a bit. Daft I know...

I've even checked content against my spreadsheet of purchases (very anal I know) and this is a rough overview:

    Out of 1246 purchases -

473 are present in full, 67 in part, plus 11 more split between numerous albums (mainly in v/a)

356 are missing but are currently available for me to buy again [a stupidly high 28% of all my purchases!]

88 are missing but the label is represented to some extent

13 are missing & available to buy in theory but are 'currently unavailable' (all Staalplaat label)

1 is missing but available albeit tagged with the wrong artist name

237 are missing & the label is currently missing (e.g. Warp, Mute, kranky, Soleilmoon, Ipecac).

Of the last category it's a bit weird seeing some stuff on an absent label - Modern Love for example - in My Music but other releases on the same label missing. I'm aware of the issue of changing distributors affecting matters but it's still a strange situation.

Reinstating these missing labels is really the main issue for me if I'm to continue my subscription in the long term
  • A few weeks ago my CC associated with eMusic had a security breach, so they issued a new card. Naturally my eMusic renewal came at the same instant the site switched over, so I am un-migrated still. I have a tech-support case, but I am not expecting it to be resolved any time soon.
  • We are now getting recommended by emusic!
In the meantime, you might consider visiting https://www.emusers.org or the eMusicOfficial subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/eMusicofficial/), where eMusic members share ideas on eMusic features and content.

  • I'm beginning to wonder when emusic is going to catch up on new releases. Smoke Sessions has 28 albums on its website, including four released this month, yet emusic only has 14 albums. I know they have had more in the past. SF Jazz Collective released their Miles Davis album well over a month ago, still no sign. I know I shouldn't be impatient and all will be better in the long run. but I am going to end up spending credits on things that I'm not really wanting whilst waiting for these releases.

I notice boosters ("extra credit") are available now, and that the system is changed. Instead of getting more credit than the price point, you pay less for the price point (so instead of say, paying $20 and getting $25 you pay $17 and get $20). Amounts to the same thing, and the bonus credit has diminished a bit, but I do find this way of pricing it appealing. I guess I like paying less versus being given extra, though I realize the difference is a bit arbitrary.
  • By the way, in case you hadn't noticed, beware at the end of the month. If you use your last credits to buy a few tracks from an album, at the moment it does not reduce the price of the album. So if some of the remaining tracks are album-only you can't get them without paying the full album price again, without any discount for tracks already purchased. I am given to understand they will fix this at some point.
  • Thanks for pointing that out! I hope they fix it soon; with a 6.49 subscription sometimes banking on the finish the album feature is the only way to get things.

Thanks for pointing this out. Time was if I spent an extra £50 I got £100 credit. Now I get £50 credit for £40, not very jolly I must say. OTOH the previous model was *ahem* too good to be true. At least the grandfathered account is being honoured at the moment, if however that goes the same way I'll be over to Bandcamp far more frequently.
  • Me too djh, especially if the dearth of really new releases in jazz continues, as opposed to Best of, Compilations and re-releases that are already there on another label continues.
  • Hi Greg
It's Dave btw! Since getting back from work I've been listening to a few potential Bandcamp purchases such as the latest from Jim Tetlow (plays with a couple of guys I know from the Ultima Thule shop - weird / ambient) & Duet for Theremin & Lap-steel (another friend, or friend of a friend a U.S. chemist who does in fact play Theremin) and a new Brotzmann and friends album. There's a lot out there. Oh and good old Robin Storey's latest Raspoon re-issue which may not be cheap but for €11 you get an interesting album and a bonus 70 minutes cd of stuff recorded at the same time. There are plenty of different marketing models out there.
  • Thanks Dave. There were actually a few new jazz releases today amongst all the older stuff when I looked after my post above. it is still not right though as for some artists they list say 6 albums but only 4 are shown. I've had my May credits rolled over to June so that helps. I am not sure if that applies to everyone or just those of us in the Beta trial. it would make a lot of sense to do it for everyone this month. Actually I don't see why credits can't have alonger life, say 90 days like Extra Credit/Boosters.
  • Hi Greg
I didn't join the trial as I had issues with the old version. I did deliberately use all my May credits before the change, which is why I was nonplussed when Germanprof mentioned the new version of the "booster sale". I'm loath to say that it's all gone bad and "I'm out of here" it's just that for a while a service that I'd used regularly and heavily has become something else and likely not as central. To put it bluntly Emusic became my online version of my weekly record shop, but London, like all other places now suffers from a dearth of good bricks and mortar stores and (warning - contentious) the "vinyl revival" is not helping.

We are heading toward too many Daves here.
(Myself and jonahpwll also...I may be forgetting others)

  • Thus the djh, but you know whatever! Never too many!! Anyway I've been called worse.
  • No sign of the new Diego Barber on Sunnyside, other jazz labels missing/fragmented. And the few new releases I am interested in are priced 8.49. Bah, humbug.
  • I won't be spending $8.49 for a digital DL.  I'll pay $8-12 for the CD.  Cheers
  • This dumped into  my inbox yesterday:

    Dear eMusic Members,

Thank you all for your great feedback on changes we've made and the experience we've created on the all-new eMusic.  Some of you have noticed that the eMusic Download Manager (DLM) is no longer supported on the new site - this is true!  Hailed by some of you as a huge improvement, others have run into some minor issues adapting. So I thought I would offer some tips to help you synchronize music between devices and your My Music library.

Before moving on to "how-to", I want to give you some background on our decision to retire this feature.  The eMusic DLM has long been a leading cause of frustration for many members - requiring special security permissions, constant updates and extra effort to recover failed downloads. Considering the advancements in browser technology, we felt the browser's native downloading capabilities would probide a more familiar and stable experience for our members.

Ok, so how do you download tracks using the new eMusic?  For most, it's as simple as:

    1. Opening your computer's "Downloads" folder and finding the albums or tracks you recently downloaded.

    2. Open your media player (like iTunes) and go to your music library.

    3. Drag and drop (unzipped) music files from your “Downloads” folder to your iTunes library, or the media player library of your choice.

If you have questions, or would like to learn more about your options, check out our step-by-step guide to downloading from our Support Center, provided by our Customer Success Team.

Please click here to go to this Guide.

I want to thank the community again - the feedback we've gotten has provided us with a lot of good input for the new eMusic Sync-Agent, already in development.  This will be a non-browser dependent solution to help members with end-to-end music management - including bulk uploading of large collections, recovery of lost music, and automatic synching of new purchases. Stay tuned to the eMusic Blog for more details.

    Kind Regards,

    Matt Robinson

    Head of Product

    - You are welcome @matt (AWOL since april 11.  ;) )

No sign of the new Diego Barber on Sunnyside, other jazz labels missing/fragmented.

That is totally my experience Doofy. I do hope that Jazz is not being left behind the Indie market in the rush to get new content.

London, like all other places now suffers from a dearth of good bricks and mortar stores

I live about an hour away from London by fast train.Other than small HMV stores with limited specialist stock, it is the nearest place to go to buy music, other than, of course, Amazon for CDs. Outside the largest cities in the UK there are few quality bricks and mortar stores left

Re the Vinyl Revival - I did read a few weeks ago that 60% of LPs sold in the UK will never get played. Our local Tesco (Walmart equivalent) actually has quite a reasonable stock of LPs at what I consider amazing prices - some upto £30, yet no equivalent CDs.

  • Wow, there's no Sunnyside Records at all.

    Nope. Motema another notable absence.

New Fred Frith on Intakt: 8.49 eMu, 7.99 Amazon, 9.80 Bandcamp
  • To amplify on a point Gprof raised above I noticed that an album I have previously purchased does not indicate that the album had been added - it has several Album Only tracks, and only the other tracks have individual Added buttons next to them, the Album Only and the album as a whole no such luck.  This seems reminiscent of a similar problem during the last re-tool.  I also don't know what to think regarding posting bargains as we seem to be monitored here perhaps - don't want to spoil something.  I notice the UFO live box set I posted on in January is gone altogether.  Opinions?
  • Opinion: It's a game.  We collectively feel it's important to pay for music.  We like bargains.  We enjoy the discussions in this forum.  In the spirit of this, I think we should keep on posting.  Plus, how many support requests do you suppose eMusic has in its backlog right now?  Also, the flow of payments and interests is not transparent.  It may be that the bargains that disappear are due to the artists involved doing a survey and pointing it out to the vendors, and I've got to support that.
  • I had to ask support to get My Music populated. It's now 13 pages, which isn't a lot considering that I've been a member since 2001. This is probably because the catalogue still has a lot of holes in it. E.g. I have downloaded a bunch of albums by artists like Charlotte Martin or Kacy Crowley from the old site which are simply not there on the new site. Other artists are there but are missing albums (e.g. Picastro, Lau Nau). Granted, this is mostly obscure stuff, but then again that's why I'm using eMusic in the first place.

One thing that did carry over, however, is that they still throw artists with the same name together, e.g. Ida, Ivy, Ruby  :(

Nice: Albums are automatically removed from your wishlist when you've downloaded them.

Not so nice: A single track download takes to me a URL that doesn't exist. I can re-download it via My Music, though. But it's annoying. As are the two confirmation popups for ever single track ...
  • My Music is indubitably incomplete, and it's not just stuff that is no longer available in the store. Indeed, I have lots of stuff in the "new" My Music that has been gone from eMu for years.

Meanwhile, many recent purchases are not in My Music - including albums that are currently available in the store. What a mess.

Interested to find that (a different version of) my eMu library is still available on the My Music Cloud site.

My Music got stuck on page 18 1/2 . . . still a lot of albums missing and many tracks albums where only 1 track survived the migration.

I'm still waiting for my SFL to turn up on my wishlist.

Once an album is saved I can't add it to any other of my list, so making annual best of lists is history.

    "What a mess"

A full scale disaster, I'd say.

  • Sample Times.  I just checked a bunch of cuts - everyone less than 2:30 had a 30-second sample, those longer had a 1:01 sample. Hmmmmm
  • I just decided to jump back in to the emusic pool after some time off, and it's good to see this site still active.  Does anyone know if my old music will be available to me, even though my membership wasn't active at the time of the switch to the new site?
  • No, your old music won't be loaded (at least mine wasn't - even though they did port over my old account and its .11¢ booster balance).

Same here, even though they said that in the e-mail (I had to ask them to port it), and I quote:

Please note, we have also copied over your save-for-later list and added past purchases to your My Music library, from which you can play or download all the music in your collection.

"Your Music Library Is Currently Empty"

    Yeah...

Hmmmm ? So they are into "apping" these days . . .
    - I wish they would spend a little time to get  the site properly running.
