Bogusław Schaeffer (1929-2019) died today. A major moment in my lifetime was discovering his book Wstep do kompozycji in my school library in 1976. I was so incredibly taken in by the wealth of graphic scores embedded inside it (excerpts of his and other composers' works) that I made it a quest to try to find this huge publication of Polish origin. It wasn't until almost 30 years later that I was able to track it down in a dusty old bookshop in Köln. They were contacted, they agreed to hold the book for me, and I stepped into their shop a few weeks later to retrieve it after traveling there from Dallas.

Now that's devotion. Even if it was part of a six week tour of Yerp. I mean you didn't get a cab straight back to the airport, or did you
Another case of discovering someone’s work when it’s too late. ? String Quartet #7 is fine stuff. He seems to have lead a very interesting life and working with Cage and Parch etc.
"Just What I Needed" and "Heartbreak City" by Ric and The Cars from their appearance at the Live Aid Concert. Probably the best value album still available on eMusic.
My buddies and I fell hard for that first Cars album. Those opening chords will forever take me back to smoky evenings back in my friend Rex's carriage house. We all had a lot of rock and roll hair in those days...
Sad to see that John Giorno has died. He had the same effect on me as Vito Acconci - probably because I discovered both about the same time. Makes me want to revisit here:
The wonderful Wolfgang Dauner died today. There are only German-language obits at the moment. He’s given me so much musical pleasure since I first discovered his playing on Robin Kenyatta’s album, Girl From Martinique back when I was just a sprout.
RIP Lyle Mays, a brilliant keyboard player whom played with Pat Metheny for many years. I saw him in London on the First Circle tour, one of the best gigs ever.
RIP eMusic - I hope that I am premature, and that you have pulled through but as the days go by this seems less likely. You were great at your peak, a good friend, and I learned and gained much from my investment in that friendship. But in recent years you have really gone astray a bit, losing many of your friends on the way. You've had a good life, so perhaps it is right for us to remember you at your best, introducing us to many new sounds, than the pallid imitation you have become recently

> No, it was in line with my time when I was studying with Stockhausen who lived only 25 miles away.
A ha the mist begins to clear. Exciting times then I'd guess.

> Giya Kancheli died today. I'm going to spend some of my birthday today bringing out some of his works and give them a good listen.
Today? As in 2.10? Yow. I'm 57 and somewhere between Delft and Amsterdam!
