I love twitter

I love twitter.

Fleet Foxes announced yesterday that tickets would go on sale this morning for a show in Seattle tomorrow. The place is frickin' beautiful and only 300 can get in.

I will be there, thanks to twitter.

(This post has no real point; I'm just excited and happy.)

  • I love twitter too but mostly because it serves as a stream of consciousness overflow for me.
  • How were secret shows announced before twitter?
  • I used to hate Twitter, but someone (here?) pointed me to twitter.com/discographies, which is often very funny. So at least there's that.

As for the Fleet Foxes, I guess they're OK, though admittedly I have none of their records... it's just the one album, right? I'm guessing the booking of live dates means there's a new one coming out?

(Uh, just checked, and yes, there's a new one coming out)
  • How were secret shows announced before twitter?

    They weren't. They stayed secrets.

Hey Jonah, could you write me a story about the worlds greatest secret band? They truly were the best ever, but they only played secret, unanounced shows, and were only heard by people who happened to wander in by accident.
  • I'm not Jonah, but I guess I could write something up about the band I was in for a while... We didn't exactly last long though, which probably isn't surprising given our marketing strategy.
  • @amclark2: I believe Jonah charges by the word. Could get pricey. We only lured him here by offering him the Pitchfork gig.

You could stipulate a six word story.

Band plays pubs. Audience stays home.

    or:

Anonymous band a sensation. Who knew?
  • Hey Jonah, could you write me a story tweet about the worlds greatest secret band?
  • The new Fleet Foxes record is ten times as good as the debut. I was already a casual fan, but I can't believe how good the new record is. It might be a masterpiece (at least, in the harmony-filled folk genre).

I think tonight is going to be special.
  • I'll admit to being jealous. I went to Pitchfork in 2008, and I was convinced that I didn't like Fleet Foxes, and so I didn't watch them. Later, when I discovered I did like them, I very much regretted that.
  • Twitter has definitely helped me find out about deals here and there. I just wish it would automatically follow any band I like without me having figure it out. Screw the jetpacks, give me my neural net.
  • Hey Jonah, could you write me a story about the worlds greatest secret band?

You don't have the necessary clearance. In fact, I'm not even sure you're allowed to be on emusers.
  • I'm not.
  • I'm not.

Oh, well, if you're not on emusers, then I guess I don't have to bother looking to see if you're allowed to be on here. Let me know if you decide to start showing up here so I can check to see if you have clearance. The last thing we want if for unauthorized individuals to be reading about secret bands that are totally fucking awesome. Right?
  • I'll be careful.
  • How was the show Kenny?
  • I can hardly describe how incredible the show was. The Foxes have really upped their game with this album and the songs sounded great live. I stood about five feet from the stage. Robin sits the whole time, but has no problem keeping your attention and the performance still seems lively. J Tillman is a really fun drummer to watch and really brings it all together.

    In one song: Dueling flutes.

It was so great seeing this band live in such a small venue. A performance I'll remember for my whole life. I've had a really difficult time not rubbing it in everyone's face everywhere I go.

If you have the chance, see this band live.
  • All you eMusers need to jump on the bandwagon...first elwoodicious and now me (@doofycomics) won the last 2 CD giveaways from Strut Records on Twitter. Next mission is to win some concert tickets like Kenny did! Need to start following the local radio stations and concert venues...
  • Agreed. The Strut giveaways are awesome. So very awesome.
  • The best way to win concert tickets is through local record store websites. I've won tickets to Josh Ritter, Gillian Welch, New Pornographers, Pavement, Dirty Projectors, and many more.
  • Now I love twitter because it told me about a secret Death Cab for Cutie show. I also love Seattle, musicland.
  • Missed the Strut giveaway. Sargent House also did a giveaway that I could have gotten a free album, unfortunately I already owned what I knew I wanted. I used to score freebies from Amie Street via Twitter...

    Crap, now I'm depressed again...
  • eMu members, @eMusic is running a Father's Day promo offering credit for dedicating an album to dad. Today only, so get on it! Some question as how to claim the credit, as instructions are to follow @eMusicHelps and DM them...but you can't DM unless they are following you. Presumably this will get worked out....
  • PS, they followed me. I could whole-heartedly dedicate the following album to my 82-year-old Dad...He loves "Compared to What"

  • I went with...

Because we grew up with swing playing nearly every day.
  • It's good I'm not a current eMu member because it would be embarrassing to chose one for my dad. I love the guy, but his taste in music is horrid (centers mostly around '70s soft rock).

    Craig
  • Recc'd for Cafreema's dad, who I suspect is probably a little older than me. But probably not by much!

My Dad is a jazz fan and that's where my interest in it came from for sure. But he was and is not a connoisseur, he just likes what he likes. Because he has always loved "Compared to What," my brother took him to see Eddie Harris in SF some years ago. Eddie was into some kind of free jazz at the time. At the break, my Dad sat down with Eddie at the bar and told how much he loved the old stuff, but didn't really think much of the "way out" stuff he was playing these days. That's my dad...

He does have a few good stories of shows he went to see back in the day, including some of the Jazz at the Philharmonic shows. He also lived in Indianapolis for a while in the 50s, and saw Wes Montgomery before Wes left for the big time.
  • 300x300.jpg

My dad's tastes run parallel to my own, just his are cornier and mine are more abrasive. He like Wagner. I like Schoenberg. He like Tommy Makem. I like Bottine Souriante.

Well, he likes a lot of folk music
  • Agreed. The Strut giveaways are awesome. So very awesome.

hm. i follow strut, but i missed the giveaway. bummer.
