I took a look through the themes. Most strike me as way too dark. Most of the others don't seem to address the issue of black text on a white back ground.
This theme however, seems to be very customizable: Bootstrap Theme
If it's any help, I'm in Snow Leopard.
I went to Firefox, which I haven't used
in at least a year and, yes, there was a problem,
but after I updated it, everything works fine now.
My regular browser is Chrome.
This theme however, seems to be very customizable: Bootstrap Theme
I'm wary of that one as it doesn't claim to be compatible with 2.2 (I wish they'd put some real metadata up so you can filter based on supported versions.) Also, customisable is great but means you need someone to customise it
I started having a quick look at themes. A lot of them seem to offer a choice between black on white or whole-hog hideous. One of them claims to "change the whole look by only changing the background". If that means what it looks like it means, could it be used to keep our current layout (to avoid disorientation and debate) but change the contrast a bit without going full grape flavor kool-aid?
ETA: On the assumption that jonahpwll's own site is not making him dizzy, the needed tweak is probably slight.
All I can say about the search so far is that yesterday I spent five minutes fruitlessly searching for a specific thread and getting too many pages that happened to have the word in them and I just searched again and it came up as the first hit.
This discussion is beyond me,but thanks to those doing all this work to keep us going. It would be great to have Jonah back as I miss his comments. My coding days were over with about 30 years ago, using BASIC and FORTRAN. Interestingly all primary age children (5 to 11) have to learn coding in school now - OK I'm sure it is very simple at 5. The aim is to spread it into secondary school too.
I wanted to mention that a couple things have changed recently
when it comes to new posts.
• First, when a picture URL is supplied, the picture would come up immediately -
before preview. It doesn't do that any longer. You have to hit "preview" before
you can see what it looks like now.
• Second, if you highlight something (text or picture) and use the "align center"
controls at the top, yes, it becomes aligned, but it shows the code before and after
now. This is probably because, for some reason in the last few days, the BBCode
now uses "less than" and "greater than" code ( "<" & ">") instead of the previous
use of brackets ( "[" & "]" ).
PS: @Brighternow there's a chance that with the change back to bbcode, the colour support has come back if you want to have a play with that.
Thanks,
To me it looks like the return of the bbcode prevents copy/paste of images.
- in Crome and Firefox nothing happens and in IE, the image url shows up with no codes.
- I don't know why the bbcode is on but it seems to have some unfortunate effects.
The header 1 and 2 is also no longer there
Just testing the quote function.
ETA: Ok, it works . . .
Checking:
Yup, the same thing as @rostasi . . . but it's not even centered.
- Strange !
Testing upload of image:
- Not working but there's a tiny little image below the post window, probably only for my eyes to see.
ETA;
- Ok maybe visible for everyone and clicking opens the image in a new tab (in Crome)
Well, I deliberately turned it on as an experiment. To see if it was preferred.
The options are wysiwyg (what it was until a day or two ago), bbcode (what it is now and I think similar to what it always used to be in the days of yore), markdown (a different style of formatting, imo more useful for documents), text, or TextEx (I dunno what that is.)
wysiwyg will tend to be prettier, but the editor doesn't seem to be as mature, causing weird things to happen sometimes. BBCode will expose the code to you, letting you edit it better, but not be so pretty when you're writing it.
Ultimately, it's about what you prefer to use. Annoyingly there's no option to let the user pick what they prefer individually.
[quote] In general this MB is now close to what it was before the Vanilla . . . [/quote]
It's never not been vanilla
[quote] If it is just the background colour, you should only need to override the `body` style.
Adding a `background-color` like `whitesmoke`, `ghostwhite` or `snow` would take the brightness off. [/quote]
Yeah, that's what I was thinking.
Edit: well that's weird, the quoting showed up in preview but not in the post.
OK, so I bumped the font size a tiny bit, made the background whitesmoke (no relation to White Snake), and the text greyer. This should reduce the contrast and hopefully make it a bit more pleasing to the eye. I wonder if there's a better font set I can try...
Edit: no, messing with fonts would be a bottomless pit.
Anyway, how does this look? The changes are pretty minor but hopefully an improvement.
Search updates will happen at a later time. I need to do some language practice and have an early night. For now, search indices won't be updating.
<blockquote>If it is just the background colour, you should only need to override the `body` style.

Using the tag "blockquote" with angle brackets will get you the indent (see above). The different color background for quotes may have gotten lost in the background color change.
In my browser the font and background color changes are barely noticeable; which would seem to be the idea.
I like it...but I never had a problem with the contrast.
I'm in Chrome BTW. I think I like the wysiwyg option
because it really was "what you got" ... and the one now
just causes confusion (as you discovered for yourself
when you tried quoting above). Yes, working on the
color schemes at night with f.lux on could be a problem.
I like that the comment box changes background color
while it's in use, but goes back to pure white while in "preview."
(it's just an aesthetic "like").

Ah, so square-bracket-quote must just be more semantic. But it is what it inserts when you press the 'quote' button...
The colour changes were more obvious when I was playing around directly and could see them in realtime.
If someone wants to check if it works better for @jonahpwll that would be grand.
As for the commenting format, it's really easy to switch. I just want some more opinions, rather than changing everything on you all willy-nilly too much
I would agree with @rostasi about the wysiwyg. It seems more predictable. The fact that the BBcode doesn't jive with the toolbar code is confusing as @Brighternow mentioned.
Sounds like eggshell is the color choice to go with....
The upside is I'll get to post again.
The downside is you all have discovered my Achilles heel... some barely noticeable combination of white, sort of white, a little less white and grey. Knocks me loopy every time.
Well, I deliberately turned it on as an experiment. To see if it was preferred.
Yeah ? - I'd really like it to be turned of again.
- Providing there's a general consensus about it.
There was a lot of practical features that vanished at the same time
Such as: Copy/paste of images.
The image resizing tool in Firefox.
Upload of images so they appear in the posts and not just as a clickable thumbnail below the post. (as below this post)
- This was really a fantastic feature. Literally hundreds of images disapeared when Bandcamp and later LastFm changed their image urls
The header 1 and 2 (was placed in the same toolbox as quote.)
As some may have noticed, I have this habit of making loooong posts like this one that took about 40 minutes whereas before it could be done in less than 5 minutes.
- It is really difficult to keep track with all those quotes, bolds, imgs and urls in this similar looking row of letters.
In general this MB is now close to what it was before the Vanilla . . .
- It's never not been vanilla
Oh ! - version #1 then . . .

Other themes are set up to be dark grey text on a light grey background; which may be worst. ColorBaseline theme; Spirited Away and Leaf Theme

I like the syntax helper.

I'll vote for whatever you find suitable . . .
As for the search, I'll do some digging and see how to make it stick.

Same is true for the color tags:

Yup, I did notice that but it was so much more simple to use the toolbar.

Don't have f.lux running when you're messing with colours, a word from the wise...

Thank you very much @eythian !
- But I can't get it to work.
Searching for "Johann Johannsson" brings out all the Johann's too.
I wonder what I'm doing wrong ?
