Well, as I've been cleaning up my iTunes, I've deleted a lot of things I'm not interested in and added to folks I'd like to get to know more or had forgotten about. I don't have any Sun Ra in my library(vinyl included) and a search here gives 0 results. I'm sure there's been a post or two over the years with some recommendations and with all that's available at Emusic & Bandcamp I'd appreciate any tips. Being a rather thrifty person, I decided to start here at Emusic.
Amy Denio/Jeroen Visser, Curlew, Shock Exchange, Skeleton Crew, The Ex, The Ululating Mummies, Chris Cochrane, Tom Cora, Lesli Dalaba,Fred Frith, Gonogonogo,
Gerry Hemingway, Wayne Horvitz, Catherine Jauniaux, Umezu Kazutoki, Zeena Parkins. Roof, John Zorn and others
Tom Cora’s premature death in 1997 was a tragic blow
to contemporary music. One of the founding members of the downtown
improvising scene, Tom was a vital member of some of the most important
cutting-edge groups of the past twenty years, including Skeleton Crew,
The Ex, Curlew, John Zorn’s game pieces and Eugene Chadbourne’s
pre-Shockabily projects.
This special 2-CD set memorial features poignant tributes by many of
Tom’s most distinguished collaborators, new recordings of Tom’s most
memorable compositions, and some of Tom’s most important recordings,
creating an exciting and vivid portrait of one of the most original
musicians in new music.
All profits from this set will go directly to Tom Cora's surviving family.
@Doofy for what it's worth this was my first Ra LP and I've seen them 15 or so times since buying it. Still one of my top 3 albums by him as well. Dark Egyptian free orchestral .... or something. Bought it in '78 or '79. Great cheeky cover too.
This album is frequently in my 'jazz not listened to recently' playlist, because it is so unspeakably sad I can't often listen to it. But beautiful not in spite of but partly because of her weakened and fading state, musically vocally and otherwise. As the linked Wikipedia article says. "she wanted a pretty album, something delicate...She wanted that cushion under her voice. She wanted to be flattered by that kind of sound.["
@djh That was @confused, not me! Not that I know every Ra recording, as who could? But I just noticed my personal favorite the other day, on the amazing Sun Ra Bandcamp page:

woops, sorry for the confusion!
I've never given that Ra /
Dickerson album the time it deserves, needs to be rectified. And
speaking of confusion the latest Ra releases on Bandcamp can be very
confusing with tracks being dropped and replaced. I realise that many
Saturn lps were made up from sessions from various dates but I'd rather
people didn't try to come along and rectify that, makes it a minefield IMHO. Still at least there are getting the material out there with somewhat improved sound.
@ Lowlife - I wish I could!! No chance though of getting a ticket. I heard somewhere that each team would get around 35000 tickets each - not enough for season ticket holders, never mind people like me. But that is more than United or Spurs will get for the final. The first FA Cup final I watched on television was Spurs against Leicester, 1961 I think, so I'd be 10. I've wanted to go ever since, but of course tickets for people like me are hard to come by....
@Doofy - Thanks I'll keep an eye out for it. I was hoping that Emusic might have it as I'm sitting with a bunch of boosters right now. @djh - Yes, I really enjoyed that whole Heliocentric series. "Strange Strings" has been my favourite so far. On to Stephen Vitiello
It's out for real now. Doesn't seem to be available for DL anywhere - I got the CD, which is a pretty little package
Do you have the rest of the series? All nifty (and fairly cheap) physical discs and all very good to great IMHO. I'll probably wait until vol 2 is released as a cd and pick them both up rather than having a d/l. Very 20th C. of me I'm sure.
@djh It's a 2-CD set that includes all the music on the two LPs (Parts 1 & 2), which are being sold separately. I've been a fan of the series from the start, but this is the first disc I've bought!
This morning I tried searching Sun Ra Arkestra and found this one Doofy posted in 2010. This EP was just released this month. Thanks!
1983 EP $3 Bandcamp - 2 tracks = much less than $1 Emusic Canada
You know how one thing leads to another, while looking for the Visions album I decided to stop by here Walt Dickerson
1968 - The first 2 tracks on this 2011 Emusic reissue on Fresh Sound Records are from this '64 album "Plays Unity". Is it cheating to retag them as separate albums? I did it anyway. Recorded March 21 & 25, 1963 Could be easy to get caught up in all this Jazz, if I'm not careful. My oldest brother was the Jazz collector in my family and I was into just about everything else. edit - Interestingly "Vibes" was first released as
1963
Oh yes, I did actually have a Sun Ra track in my CD library.
1988 Stay Awake (Various Interpretations Of Music From Vintage Disney Films) Sun Ra And The Arkestra - Pink Elephants On Parade (From Dumbo) Quite an interesting collection of folks. ps- This album is still as enjoyable now as was the first listen. Makes me think of the Sunday nights as a lad wrestling with my brothers to get a good spot in front of the TV for Walt Disney Presents.
Well, here's the other part of Doofy's post (almost)
2006, reissued 2008 "These recordings present Salah Ragab and The Cairo Jazz Band's definitive work, recorded in Heliopolis Egypt between 1968 and 1973." This Emusic release has 16 tracks that appear to include the singles listed on his Discogs page. - I couldn't leave him all alone in the library. Ps- Thanks again @Doofy another listen I've really enjoyed. Made me think of Maurice El Medioni.
