1986 This Is This ps I just had to add these from the vinyl -2 of mine & one of my wife's. No wonder we were bound to meet up. It was a terrific visit with the past. Recalling discussions with my oldest brother about jazz or fusion. Man, it sure was much simpler back then. This week can't go fast enough!
Well, a while back as I was browsing through the vinyl I came across Yma Sumac from my wife's collection. I realized that in the last 20 years that our collections have been combined I've played very few from her collection. As she's the organized one she usually has little notes attached with a comment. I was most intrigued to hear B-2 on the Sun Virgin album which she's written "In which she alternates between Louis Armstrong and a whipped dog". Now, I'd heard of Yma but I hadn't heard her sing. What a treat and what a range! I don't normally listen to the albums as I put them through GarageBand but I couldn't stop listening. At times she sounded like a theremin. It's just amazing what sounds some folks can make with their voice! I added Recital from Emusic and note that they also have Legend of the Sun Virgin and some others. I'm happy to listen to these again! Yma Sumac
ps The emusic Armstrong/dog track is #8 Kuyaway (Inca Love Song) pps- My wife assures me she's never heard a dog being whipped and used some dramatic license.
Post-Fish Marillion are very hit-and-miss for me, and though I knew Brave was supposed to be one of their best, I only just got around to it. I gave the 2013 live version (which a friend picked up on Freegal, prompting this dive) a couple of listens through a few days ago, then saw that the deluxe edition of the original had a Steve Wilson remix and could be picked up at about a third off average price here. So after a run through the three versions on there I've given Brave 5 listens this week, and am increasingly loving it. But the surprise was the live version on the deluxe package (after finding several other Marillion live albums just so-so) - really great sound, great crowd, a highlight.
Haroumi Hosono production I believe; love his production work. It's sort of seemingly shallow but with lots of depth if you look for it. Of course Hosono is possibly THE most interesting Japanese musician from 1970-200; in my books anyway. Also full of laughs = musical references and quotes / styles.
