Newly-remastered footage of pioneering British psych outfit Soft Machine is headed for release as Facelift France and Holland. The three-CD/DVD set will arrive on March 25th via Cuneiform Records and showcases the earliest known footage of the 1960s Canterbury group.
I was excited, mostly, by the idea of getting the DVD of the whole concert, so there’s that … but, if you can listen thru the Bandcamp linked cover above, you’ll hear that they cleaned up the sound, but - and this may be the deciding factor for you - they had to interweave some bits of lesser quality audio into the good audio in order to create a constant flow. It can be jarring sometimes - even in the middle of a solo it might change quality(!) In the end, I love the music so much, I’m willing to put up with this (and the screaming from a guy who’s an overzealous fan) - and, again, I’ve got a DVD coming that I’m really looking forward to. If you can’t listen at BC to the whole collection (it might only be available to those who’ve already bought it?), then PM me and I’ll send you a good chunk of audio for you to compare and decide.
@rostasi I figured they were just patches a la a million Dead shows I have and yes jarring is usually the word. I'll probably go for it anyway as Third is about my favorourite Softs period.
Unpacking more junk after the move and found my old FiioX5; powered it up and gave this a shot. I normally dislike sampled old blues and jazz but this works a treat on a sunny Sunday in Kirkwall. Also it's live so I guess there's a tad more skill in triggering samples.
