  • Tried a different tact, and searched for specific albums on my various lists. Found a couple:

    The Haxan Cloak - Excavation
Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 3: To See More Light

So I'll probably get those, even though $6 is way too much for an mp3.

  • I'm with you Craig et al. 6 is no sale.
  • Cupid's Head, the new album from The Field got a "Best New Music" on Pitchfork today, and is $2.59 at amazon right now.
  • $2.59? Ooookay. I'll snag it for that. Thanks amclark!

  • I guess it's priced like an EP?
  • Sweet, not even waiting to listen to the samples. That's an awesome find.

This release was on my eMu SFL, but I went to Amazon to check reviews and found it is only $5.99 there - Soundway presents The Original Sound Of Cumbia, etc., which is half the price at eMu, so for anybody not using eMu at 50%, que sabrosa.

  • Nice find, BDB! Now if I could find a good salsa music compilation

Two full sets of Beethoven Piano Sonatas are now available for $9.49, and more than compete with the Lim set:

    Louis Lortie
    Claude Frank

Both are superb releases. I might slightly lean with the Frank because he's just a pianist's pianist. But also, the editing is better for mp3 since you won't get any breaks in sonatas 23, 28, or 30-31 like you will for Lortie. But Lortie is a more modern recording, and his playing is consistently wonderful. But both would beat out the younger Lim, as fascinating a player as she can be at times.
  • At this price I decided to try the Lim set, very different, thanks for the post.

Let me know what you think about Lim. I have something of a love-hate relationship with her playing.

I also forgot to mention the Jeno Jando set for $7.99. Again, not as good as the two stellar releases I mentioned, but still very satisfying overall.
  • Thanks for this music recs. While I have an Alfred Brendel 2CD Set from DG and of course the Big Beethoven Box, I'm always happy to hear other recordings, especially those that come with a recommendation.
  • Just cross-posting this here for convenience since it connects to this conversation - might have been a better place for it.
  • Not as much as an Amazon "deal" but a new store in the Amazon Mega-Mall - Replay, a used music store. The listings are helpful since the compare the new and used prices, but I cannot see how this is any different than the usual listings. At least for the few discs I was interested in, the New with Autorip and free shipping with my Prime account was better than the used price. I narrowed to Jazz, Vinyl, and was offered John Coltrane's Love Supreme first (great), Norah Jones (er, Jazz?) and something from a "Marshall Mathers" that appears to be a comedy album. At least I took it as a joke in the Jazz stacks.

What this used music store is missing is the bin of new arrivals where a Gem might be found, two or three bins of Dollar records (mostly Jackson Browne's Hold Out and a bunch of Hall and Oates, but occasionally the owner throws some good stuff in to keep you digging), the smell of old vinyl and incense (and the funky smoke from the back room), and a cute-yet-bored girl behind the counter to take your money.

I just do not think HTML 5 is going to be able to handle that virtual experience.

Agreed. On the other hand, what the used record stores in Grand Rapids are sadly missing that the online ones are more likely to have is a clientele who sell them used copies of European jazz and obscure ambient/electronica. Every time I do the rounds I end up wishing more people living here would briefly like and then tire of and sell the kinds of music I like. Had to go (virtually speaking) all the way to Estonia for a used copy of Wil Bolton's Time Lapse. (Admittedly that is a rare one). Easier to do that in HTML than in the flesh.
  • Local used record stores are my preference, but they only really have what people sell them. As you well know, Grand Rapids, Michigan is not a hotbed for European Jazz and/or elctronica. And people who buy that sort of thing usually do not sell it to the local record shop for beer money during hunting season.
  • Good point Plong.

I have similar issues with finding used poetry books. Poetry in most bookstores is nearly nonexistent unless it is a special bookstore or near a college. Used bookstores usually have a few expected books like lots of Rod McKuen ("Listen to the Warm" anyone?) Otherwise, most poetry readers must be buried with their books!
  • most poetry readers must be buried with their books!
Perhaps they are pessimistic about their resale value. The other week I took a big bag of books to a nearby good, large bookstore that does used books. I was not expecting them to take everything by any means, but was still surprised at some of the things they were not interested in - not poetry, but e.g. Martha Nussbaum, Umberto Eco, Stanislaw Lem, Terry Pratchett? At least they took "Game of Thrones" off my hands (yes, I'm cheerfully capitulating after the first volume). I wonder how hard it is to sell a used poetry book to a store?
  • That is true. I take books to the nearest Half-Priced books and rarely get much, but sometimes I just have books I don't need anymore. I've dabbed in selling some books on Half.com and have considered selling some on Amazon if I ever get around to getting my Tax ID#.
  • Half-Price Books barely give much for anything, regardless of resale. I like shopping there, but if I want to trade in books and music for a store credit, I go elsewhere.
  • They're Back......another VoxBox edition - Mozart:Complete Symphonies - $0.99, 12 hours, you know, you know. Looks like the Bach Guild has new additions as well Great Big Symphonies I and II.
  • In my experience so far, Amazon's "cloud player" sucks at least as badly as a download manager as emusic's ever did. I really don't get why downloading should be so hard. It's such a standard process, works without a hitch on a million free sites. But as soon as you actually pay money for music and sites start making fancy download managers you just get strings of download errors. Grr.
  • It does have trouble with long albums. You pretty much have to complete it in one swoop or the remaining tracks left to download will "expire" and you will have try again. It looks like they've recently come out with a program to download and play tracks. Not for me, but maybe someone else might find it worth exploring.
  • The Amazon downloader has always worked without a hitch for me, but I always elect to use the old downloader and don't bother with their new one. I figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
  • Big Baroque Box, Vol II - $0.99

  • Thanks Luddite, I enjoyed the first Baroque set very much. Glad to see another 14 hours.
  • Thanks as well. Always room for some more Baroque - probably my number one all around chilling in the house/housework genre, besides my favorite era of classical.
  • I don't believe this $1.99-$3.99 header was up until today - certainly a lot of titles in some categories but don't know hos much is the usual EP crapola.
  • I know that automated pricing will regularly produce weird stuff, but this tempting deal on the CD just made me laugh.

  • Yeezus for $1.99; glad I waited! Thanks Big-D!
